Power Point put into Blog!

Octavian – AKA Caesar Augustus

Augustus - the first emperor – getting it done

Begins the Pax Romana – a period of peace and prosperity
Built roads, aqueducts (brought water to the cities)
Set up civil service to take care of roads, the grain supply, even a postal service
Augustus dies at age 76 in A.D. 14, and passes power to…

From Jesus to Christianity

Jesus was a Roman citizen and a practicing Jew
At 30, he began his ministry (A.D. 31 – 33), preaching to the poor (and there were lots of ‘em) in the empire, and reaching out to outsiders
Statements like “My kingdom is not of this world” made the Romans (and the Jews) nervous, and they began to plan his execution
The governor of the Roman province of Judaea, Pontius Pilate (prompted by Jewish high priests), sentences Jesus to death by crucifixion

A Wiki look at Jesus

Jesus the historical figure is explored in his Wikipedia entry
The first four paragraphs are particularly interesting

The word spreads about the risen Jesus

Paul is instrumental in telling the world about Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, and message
He travels far and wide: Cyprus, Anatolia, Athens, Corinth, Macedonia, Rome, Jerusalem, and maybe even Spain and Britain
He writes letters to many of those he spoke to – these epistles are a part of the New Testament
If not for the efforts of Paul, it is likely that Jesus remains an obscure preacher, instead of the central figure of the world’s largest religion

St. Paul of Tarsus

Tiberius

As Augustus’ stepson and adopted son, Tiberius succeeded Octavian
Although a great general, he was a dark, somber, reclusive, and reluctant emperor
He referred to the Senate as “men fit to be slaves”
Germanicus started out as Tiberius’ ally, since he quelled a legion mutiny, but when it looked like he would succeed Tiberius, he got paranoid and had Germanicus killed
Died in AD 37 at the age of 77, giving way to...

Caligula – good start…

In addition to being Germanicus’ son, he was Tiberius’ adopted grandson and great-nephew – putting him next in line for emperor
He started off well: granting bonuses to those in the military, declaring treason trials a thing of the past, and made government spending a matter of public record
All in all, the first seven months of Caligula’s reign were “completely blissful” (according to the historian Philo)… then…

…bad finish for Caligula

He began to fight with the Senate
He claimed to be a god, and had statues displayed in many places – including the Jewish temple in Jerusalem (sacrilege!)
Other examples of cruelty and insanity: he slept with other men’s wives and bragged about it, indulged in too much spending and sex, and even tried to make his horse a consul and a priest (at least that’s what his critics said)
Assassinated by his own aides, AD 41 (aged 28)

Next in line: Claudius

Ostracized by his family because of his disabilities (limp, slight deafness, possible speech impediment – thought to be cerebral palsy or polio), he was the last adult male in his family when Caligula was killed
He rose to the occasion: he conquered Britain; he built roads, canals, and aqueducts; he renovated the Circus Maximus
Had an awful marriage to Messalina, who was quite often unfaithful to him, even plotting to seize power for her lover Silius through a coup – so Claudius had them killed

Meanwhile – religious troubles

Christianity and Judaism: monotheistic
Romans had many gods, plus at times the emperor was viewed as a god
AD 66: a group of Jews called the Zealots tried to rebel, but Roman troops put them down and burned their temple (except for one wall)
The Western Wall today is the holiest of all Jewish shrines
Half a million Jews died in the rebellion

Persecution of Christians

Romans were harsh toward those who would not worship the emperor
Especially Christians, who were viewed as followers of a new, upstart religion (cult)
Often used for “entertainment” purposes in the Colosseum (thrown to the lions, etc.)
Despite the oppression, Christianity grew quickly – by AD 200, around 10 percent of the people in the Roman empire were Christians

Test Thursday!

Today we reviewed and it seems that we are going to have a test coming up on Rome. we talked about the different rulers that Rome saw in that time and the good and bad decisions some made when the were the ruler of the most important empire in the world. We also talked about how Jesus was a roman citizen and  At 30, he began his ministry (A.D) 31-33), preaching to the poor and there were lots of them in the empire, and reaching out to outsiders. Tiberius was a very insane person and we will talk more about it in class.

Class Friday!

We learned about Tiberias who was a bad ruler. He had Coligulas two older brothers killed and killed other political rivals. He got sick of Rome and went away to a little island to hide away. Once his rule ended Caligula took over. He was a bipolar ruler who made bad decisions and even killed a priest by stabbing him in the head. He also stopped in the middle of a war to pick up seashells. He did not like Jews. Which does not explain why he made a statue of himself in a Jewish church. Finally Claudius was a not very graceful person. Eventually he was the empire of Rome and was nice to the people.

Thursday, May 12, 2011

Notes

  • The emperor sought council outside of their ranks.
  • Tiberius is now the leader of the Roman Empire.
  • Caligula "Bootsy" has his two older brothers in prison.
  • The time turned into a time of corruption and greed. People started to perform slavish acts.
  • Tiberius could not stop the purge.
  • In the year 26, Tiberius has turned his back on Rome and went to the island of Capri.
  • He sought re leaf in astronomy. He created sex tribes. He decorated the rooms with Egyptian pornography.

In this system with Tiberius being able to do anything he wants, he can engage in this sick behavior and it is completely wrong with the Emperor being in charge and untouchable.
Some people think that Tiberius behavior was a result from led poisoning.
Caligula was his only surviving error.

Part 2 reading on Rome

consul-
 two roman officials.
veto-
consul being overruled.
senate-
aristocratic branch of the Roman Government
assembly-
the democratic side of the Roman government.
dictator
- a leader who has the power for most things
mercenary-
soldiers who fight in combat for a sallary
Questions:
1.        1. Plebeians were dissatisfied with Rome's government in the earlier years because it barred them from being able to hold most government positions, commanding armies or serving as high priests. Plebeians gained some power and rights when they decided to stop fighting in the army unless the patricians let them be a part of things. The plebeians made things more equal for all, enslavement by debt was ended and they had a code of laws called the twelve tables.

2.       2. They thought they had a balanced government because they claimed that their government was partly a monarchy, partly and aristocracy, and partly a democracy.

3.        3. Roman government won support of conquered people by giving them different laws and regulations. The Romans made sure they stayed and obeyed them.

4.         4. At the start of the Punic Wars Carthage seemed to be stronger. That is because they have a population of about 250,000 and that was 3 times the size of Rome. They had lots of ships. Rome was stronger. Rome could draw a reserve of more than 500, 000 troops. Second, Rome's citizen troops were a lot more loyal and reliable than the mercenaries employed by Carthage. Third, warfare was a Roman specialty.
5.        5. If Hannibal had been the victor, Carthage would have become the greatest empire in the world instead of Rome.
6.        6. They freed the Greeks of their ruler Philli and The Greeks were greedy with their freedom.

definitions and questions!

Republic- A political unit that is not ruled by a monarch and in which citizens have the right to vote for leaders. The word Republic came from the Latin Phrase res publica which means public affairs.

Gravitas- having weightiness or seriousness. Gravitas was a virtue that contained discipline strength and loyalty.

Pater Familias- Father of the family ,or the eldest male in the household. He was the leader of the household and had complete power. He controlled all property and could even sell family to slavery or kill them. He usually acted as the protector of the family though. He spoke for families at assemblies and in court.

Toga- It was an uncomfortable garment the Romans wore. It was cold to wear in winter and hot in the summer.

Patrician- a small group of upper class families who dominated Rome. They claimed their ancestors were the fathers of Rome. They claimed that they had the authority to make laws.

Plebian- The common farmers, artisans, and merchants. They were free citizens with the right to vote. The had far less power than Patricians though.

Legion - A massive military unit consisting of 4000-6000 men. They had heavily armed infantry and the calvary

Century- One of the sixty smaller groups that the legion was divided into. This allowed the Roman legion to be more flexible and able to move around more than the Greek Phalanx. The Romans could flank and surround enemies with the Centuries.

Questions:
1. The geography of Rome helped Rome because of the many rivers and access to the Mediterranean which let them get goods in and out of the country easily.
2. The Latins, Greeks, and Etruscans were important part of the Roman development because the Latins were the first people to colonize the Roman regions and than came the Greeks, than finally the Etruscans.
3. The values of early Roman society were to be powerful and had great elegance at the same time.
4.  The women ran the house, when the father was the protector of the house. The wife advised her husband. They could not vote.
5. They all had to join the army before doing anything in the world!

Alexander had the properties and the words of wisdom to be one of the greatest leaders to ever live. In the movie was one of the best battle seems I have ever seen. I was very realistic.
